what I **envy** most right now😻

I’m not ashamed to admit it... I envy my cat. She spends her days luxuriating in dreamy slumber, earning the nickname "my pillow."

When I grow up, I really want to be like her—snuggling into cozy corners for catnaps anytime I please.

But let’s be real. My days have been going more like this…

MORNING: DESPERATE FOR COFFEE
AFTERNOON: DEAD TIRED
NIGHT: STARING AT THE CEILING

So yes, watching my cat’s serene, restful life made me look for the secret sauce—enter the 7 Types of Rest.

We’ve been conditioned to think all rest equals sleep. But here’s the truth: ✨sleep and rest aren’t the same✨.

They pair nicely together like salt and pepper, yet occupy different roles.

Did this lightbulb moment smack you silly too? Let me fill you in.

Contrary to popular belief, sleep isn’t optional. It’s a built-in biological mandate. Whether you like it or not, your body will ultimately call the shots and put you to bed.

Even though 7-9 hours of sleep is essential, think of sleep as the headline–true rest is the compelling story beneath it that makes the whole piece worth reading.

So, if you’re wondering how to improve your sleep. Think: active physical rest.

Why physical rest isn’t up for negotiation.

Without physical rest, you’re breaking the Law of Conservation (no, not the national parks kind). It’s the rule where you don’t get to play Almighty. You can’t create or destroy energy, you can only shuffle it around.

Every little thing you do taps into your energy. Yep, even skimming this email, is drawing from your internal reserves.

Think of energy as your personal piggy bank–you spend it, you better be ready to fill it back up somehow. Otherwise, you’re committing daylight robbery against your own body’s bank account. Like borrowing from Peter to pay Paul sort of thing.

And that leaves you in a chronic rest deficit. Spoiler: no amount of caffeine will bail you out of that one.

What physical rest involves.

Real active physical rest means intentionally letting your body unwind while your eyes are open. It’s about unraveling and reducing the tightness and tension in your tissues. Getting your stuck bits loosey-goosey.

Depending on where your body holds stress (hello, clenched jaw!), you’ll need to mix things up.

Pause and give your body a once-over:

  • Is your neck or shoulders staging a protest?
  • Are you clutching your phone like your life depends on it?
  • Is there a vice squeezing the space behind your eyes?
  • Are your hips wound tighter than a drum?
  • Is your lower back yelling, "Enough already!"?

Listen to these signals—what I like to call "the issues in your tissues." And give your body some sweet talk in a language it loves.

How to refuel with physical rest.

Keep it flowing and fluid. Life’s no dance video, but periodically getting your wiggle on is mandatory.

  • Break every hour to stretch. Add in neck rolls, ankle circles, maybe some hip figure eights if no one's watching.
  • Show some love to your fingers and toes. Massage them base to tip.
  • Dive into a restorative yin class or take leisurely, barefoot walks (nature-style).

Embrace stillness on purpose. Sometimes you’ve got to embody a human stop sign and just lie supine.

  • Plop down on the floor, foam roll optional, and zero in on which body parts are screaming for attention.
  • Bask in meditative breathing like ā€œBox Breathingā€: inhale, hold, exhale, hold each for a count of four, and repeat.
  • Treat yourself to a neck, foot or whole-body massage—you deserve a spa moment.

Make ā€œsettle down & sleepā€ a thing. Train your bedtime like a circus lion: predictable and majestic.

  • Soak away your day like you’re in a bath bomb commercial.
  • Kill the lights and screens, and let calming soundscapes take over.
  • Cue up some guided relaxation such as yoga nidra. Even insomniacs swear by it.
  • Build your body’s trust with a regular bedtime–consistency is key.

Want to know what really resonates? Finding those little things that recharge you. So dare to experiment until you nail that balance—not too much, not too little.

As I watch my cat doze, I’m reminded that achieving deep rest isn’t just for the birds (or cats) - it’s within reach for all of us humans.

Let’s make rest resonate with real life.

Simply resonating with catnaps,

Stacy🌺

Have you ever caught yourself saying… ā€œI don’t have a choice.ā€ There’s a specific kind of exhaustion baked into that sentence. Like life slid a contract across the table, signed your name, and now you’re stuck carrying out the terms and conditions nobody bothered to explain. Cue the internal toddler tantrum.😔 I hear it hiding inside the I have to’s of life all the time: ā€œI have to keep the peace at family dinners.ā€ ā€œI have to stay in this job because I need the income.ā€ ā€œI have to take care...

I had the weirdest Discovery Call of my career this week. She appeared on Zoom clutching a mug of coffee like it was the only stable thing in the room. But her eyes? Exhausted. Like her nervous system had been pulling double shifts for years. ā€œEvery day when he walks in the door,ā€ she said, ā€œI brace a little… because I don’t know how the conversation is going to turn.ā€ You can picture it. šŸ‘€ The click of the front door.Keys on the counter.
